Work Life Balance & Well Being

Meaningful work is central to society and essential for the dignity and well being of individuals. Improved quality of life includes having access to learning and consultation, employee involvement and autonomy as well as increased availability of work/life policies.

Employees are also parents, children, citizens, friends and neighbours. The modern world, despite all its advancements in communications technologies, is a more complex place to work and live, to raise a family and be an active member of the community. Companies have the right to expect a high standard of performance from employees, but also have a responsibility to facilitate workers as they manage the pressures and stresses from everyday life.

Within the workplace a number of practices were associated with increasing stress levels. These included the provision of information without meaningful consultation, lack of autonomy and control and high levels or organisational change. Performance reviews and working from home were also associated with higher stress levels.

  • Work life balance initiatives and family friendly practices is increasing, the primary objective is to increase staff morale, retention and commitment.
  • Under utilization of the workforces as a result of insufficient employee involvement and participation in the workplace.
  • Uneven investment in workplace training and lifelong learning
  • Many workplaces missing out on opportunities to improve their capacity for change by failing to communicate and consult effectively with their employees. This is directly correlated to organisational performance and workplace change.
